UA’s Week of Welcome (WOW) is a large series of programs hosted by the university to help first year and transfer students in their transition to academic and student life at the Capstone. The official days of WOW 2017 are Saturday, August 19th through Thursday, August 31st. WOW is only two weeks, but the possibilities are endless!

Do I have to attend Week of Welcome?

All new students are encouraged to attend Week of Welcome. Attending WOW events is the best way to meet people and become better acquainted with campus and University resources before classes start. Each day of WOW features key events designed to meet the diverse interests of UA students. Taking full advantage of WOW will help you get the best start at the University of Alabama!

What if I cannot attend a Week of Welcome event?

Although there is no penalty for missing Week of Welcome, you are encouraged to attend as many events as you can. WOW activities are designed to meet the needs of new students and help them become more familiar with the campus, community and classmates.

Will I receive information about Week of Welcome?

All new students will be emailed and mailed information about Week of Welcome over the summer. A Week of Welcome information table will be available at Capstone Connections during every Bama Bound orientation session. Students will receive a complete schedule of events when they arrive on campus. In addition, the schedule will be posted around campus and in the Crimson White student newspaper. The Week of Welcome schedule is also available online or on the WOW Facebook Page.

When can I move into my residence hall?

New students can move into their residence halls during times designated by the Housing & Residential Communities. Visit for more information.

How do students living off-campus participate in Week of Welcome events?

Students living off-campus are welcome to attend any of the Week of Welcome events. Please see the WOW schedule for times, locations and transportation recommendations. We recommend that off-campus students park in their designated parking lots and utilize Crimson Ride to get to the events. Bus route recommendations are included on the schedule.

Can I still participate in Week of Welcome if I am participating in Greek recruitment, marching band camp or an athletic team?

Although many Week of Welcome activities may conflict with recruitment or other events, there are a number of activities offered at various times. You should still be able to attend some events even if you are involved in other activities during the week.

What is Ripple Effect?

Each year the UA Center for Service and Leadership kicks off the new school year with a service project aimed at engaging new students. Ripple Effect: Freshmen Volunteer Day is a chance for new students to get to know their community, their fellow classmates and the Center for Service and Leadership through a day of service. Ripple Effect is planned in conjunction with Week of Welcome and serves as a signature event to help students get connected to campus. For more information, visit
